Specialized Cells
Cell structure is matched to its function.
Cells have different shape, size and structure according to the function they perform.In most cases they have a particular structure that helps them to carry out these functions.
Here are some examples to specialized cells;
Ciliated Cells
Ciliated cells are found on the linings of air passages and in the fallopian tubes of female reproductive system. Cilia means tiny hair. They are specialized for sweeping mucus, in bacteria and dust have been trapped up into the throat. They help the egg cell or the first embryo to move down to the uterus. Their adaptation is having tiny flicking hairs.

Root Hair Cell
They are specialized for absorbing water and inorganic ions from the soil. Their adaptation is having long extensions to increase the surface area for diffusion and osmosis.

Red Blood Cells
Specialized for transporting oxygen from the lungs to all other parts of the body. Their adaptations are;
- lack of nuclei
- containing hemoglobin
- disc-like biconcave shape

Xylem Vessels Elements
- Specialized for transporting water up through a plant from its roots to the leaves.
- Help supporting the plant
Adaptations:
- Made up of dead cells
- No cell content
- Cell walls are lignified (contain lignin which is wood)
